What Pat Buchanan says about VA Tech

Almost no attention has been paid to the fact that Cho Seung-Hui was not an American at all, but an immigrant, an alien. ...

Cho was among the 864,000 Koreans here as a result of the Immigration Act of 1965, which threw the nation's doors open to the greatest invasion in history, an invasion opposed by a majority of our people.

My blood ran cold reading this. I felt a fear that I have not felt since childhood when I used to get pushed around and told to "Go back to where you came from." In vain I tried to explain that I was born here and therefore could not "go back" to anywhere else. For a brief while I was convinced that the undeniable power of my logic would persuade them. But it made no difference whatsoever.

There are numerous flaws with Mr. Buchanan's argument, but I fear that logic and reason have no power over this hate either.

Today, I was grabbing a cup of coffee and looked up at the tv. CNN was on and they were showing footage from the Immigration rally that took place in Los Angeles on May Day. Sixty L.A. police officers have been removed from active duty due to excessive use of force when breaking up the demonstration. The footage showed officers pushing and clubbing unarmed demonstrators. And except that it was in color, it looked to me just like the footage that I had seen of demonstrations during the 60s.

Let there be no doubt that this anti-immigrant backlash is about race. I note that on Mr. Buchanan's extensive list, there are no "immigrants" from Western Europe.

Some people, who were not white, blew up the twin towers and attacked the pentagon. In response to that we went to war against two countries, one of which had nothing to do with the attacks, and started building a wall between us and Mexico. What does Mexico have to do with the terrorists??! Now, a mentally disturbed kid, who is not white, shoots up a school and the response is "It's all the immigrants' fault."

When the shootings first happened, the Asian American community was afraid of a backlash against all Asians. Now I fear that we were thinking too narrowly - that this will lead to a backlash against all people of color.
